A Tour of the South Beach Lifeguard Stands

South Beach is a two mile area at the southern tip of Miami Beach. It is known for its historic Art Deco buildings, cafes, boutique hotels, night scene and wide sandy beaches. Ocean Drive is the center of South Beach and runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean.

Dotting the beach are the iconic Miami Beach lifeguard stands with their bright colors adding a vivid contrast to the ocean. The unique design of the towers, some would say Art Deco, have resulted in them becoming a tourist attraction for visitors to South Florida.

In 1992, Hurricane Andrew caused severe damage to the South Florida area, including destroying the existing lifeguard towers.  During the recovery, an architect named William Lane offered his services and created a series of towers which are designed to look and feel as if they have been  on the beach forever.
